Toronto General Hospital Research Institute (TGHRI) is happy to announce that this year’s Research Day will be held on Wednesday October 9th, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Toronto Downtown, 108 Chestnut St, Toronto, ON

This year's keynote speaker will be:
Dr. Kang Lee, Professor, and Tier 1 CRC Chair in developmental neuroscience at the University of Toronto & a Senior Scientist at the University of California, San Diego.  Dr. Lee will be presenting “Affective artificial intelligence and its applications in healthcare”.

This event is a celebration of TGHRI achievements in basic and clinical research and it is an opportunity to promote interdepartmental and cross pillar collaborations among researchers.  TGHRI Research Day is open to all TGHRI Scientists, Clinician Scientists, trainees and staff. Undergraduate students, MSc students, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows are invited to submit a first-author abstract of their research, either completed or in progress to the Research Day poster competition.  To highlight TGHRI’s many areas of research and to encourage collaboration and discussions between groups, all abstracts submitted will be published in our Research Day booklet.  As done last year, the first round of poster judging will take place prior to Research Day.  The TGHRI leadership team and TGHRI faculty and staff will grade the abstracts and up to 60 abstracts will be accepted as posters.  Those with the highest ranked abstracts will be asked to give a brief presentation of their posters during Research Day, and the winners will be presented with an award.

Abstract submissions are due by Wednesday September 18th, 2019.  Abstract submission is part of the registration process; if you plan to submit an abstract, DO NOT register until your abstract is ready.  If you are not submitting an abstract, please register as a General Attendee as soon as possible.

General registration closes September 18th, 2019.

Online registration is mandatory so that proper seating, catering, and materials can be provided.

TGHRI Research Day 2019 is organized by the TGHRI Directorate Office (TGH, 1N-121).  Please contact Cathy Chau at cathy.chau@uhnresearch.ca or 416 340 4800 x 7055 (14-7055) with any questions.

The TGHRI Research Day will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Toronto Downtown, 108 Chestnut St, Toronto, ON.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Kang Lee

Bio:
Dr. Kang Lee is a Professor, and Tier 1 CRC Chair in developmental neuroscience at the University of Toronto & a Senior Scientist at the University of California, San Diego. For over two decades he has studied lying and face processing. Drawing on more than 2 decades of research, his team has developed a novel imaging system called Transdermal Optical Imaging that uses conventional video cameras to decode human physiology and emotions.

"Affective Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications in Healthcare"
Artificial intelligence is now everywhere and has the potential to change all aspects of our lives. However one major shortcoming of the AI today is that although it may have high IQ, it lacks EQ, or emotional intelligence. In fact, the best AI system today does not have the emotional intelligence of a 2-year old. For AI to transform our lives, AI must reach the next level. That is, any future AI system must have not only IQ but EQ. In this talk, Kang Lee will draw insights from a century of psychological research on human emotion to discuss various methods AI developers can use to develop intelligent systems with affective artificial intelligence, or the ability to detect, decode, interpret, and simulate human affects. He will also discuss how we can use affective AI in healthcare.
