UHN Marches for Science on April 14, 2018 – Save the Date!

On April 14, people from across Canada will show their support for science as part of the international March for Science movement. As members of Canada’s largest research hospital, we are aware—on a daily basis—of the importance of science to making smart decisions, improving health, and building prosperity.

All UHN scientists, clinicians, trainees and staff are invited to bring their friends and families, and to come out that day to join Brad Wouters, Charlie Chan, the Research Institute Directors, and other UHN leaders in marching for this very important cause. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together and to stand in solidarity with our friends and families and other Canadians to celebrate science.

EVENT    March for Science Toronto
DATE      Saturday April 14, 2018
TIME       10am (UHN Pre-gathering at ‘TORONTO’ sign)
                  11am (event start time)

  • Rallying your team and pledging attendance (see ‘RSVP’ link )
  • Joining us at a pre-gathering at Nathan Phillips Square to pick up free refreshments, noise makers and posters

#UHNMarches4Science Contest
Share a photo of you, your team, lab or office at the march on twitter using the hashtag #UHNMarches4Science for a chance to win one of three $50 Mercatto gift certificates. Let’s show the world that Toronto and UHN are passionate about science!

Why we are showing our support: science impacts every aspect of our lives. It provides us with a way to protect our health and our environment, to make informed decisions, to innovate, to identify and address inequalities, and to create smart and sustainable economic growth.

While the benefits of science may often be taken granted, science advocacy—from grassroots to political activism—is key for Canada to safeguard and build a safe, healthy, prosperous and just society. We will march for:

  • Reinvestment in independent research, which has fallen by around 35% per researcher in the past decade [2017 Canada’s Fundamental Science Review]
  • To show our support for fundamental and basic medical research, which lays the foundation for transformational real-world applications, such as new therapies, and better patient care
  • Sustained investment in research as a way to drive innovation, build a knowledge economy and improve the well-being of Canadians
  • To show the world that Canada is passionate about Science!

Hope to see you there!

This year, the Toronto March for Science will begin at Nathan Phillips Square and end in Queen’s Park, on Saturday, April 14th 2018.
